According to legend, Budva was founded by Cadmus, the son of the Phoenician king Agenor, who, after being expelled from Thebes, found refuge with the Illyrian tribe of the Enchelei, where he was even proclaimed king of Illyria. The story says he arrived in the region with an ox-drawn cart, and the city’s name, Budva, is said to originate from the Greek word bous, meaning ox.

Today, Budva is a city visited by countless tourists for good reason. From its historic landmarks and numerous beaches to modern hotels and seaside restaurants, Budva offers everything you need for the perfect vacation.

A city that must be on your list of places to visit is definitely Tivat. Tivat offers a variety of attractions, from natural gems such as Saint Marko Island, the special nature reserve “Solila,” the viewpoint on Vrmac Hill, the Pine promenade, and Flower Island, to the luxurious Porto Montenegro marina.

Porto Montenegro gives Tivat a modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere, making it one of the most attractive destinations on the Montenegrin coast. At the foot of Mount Saint Elijah lies Perast, a quiet oasis of the Montenegrin coast. Perast is only 29 kilometers from Herceg Novi, making it an essential stop for day trips or organized transfers.

Perast reached its peak of development in the 17th and 18th centuries, when most of its palaces, churches, and other representative buildings were constructed. These structures still stand today, testifying to the town’s rich maritime tradition and historical significance.

The city’s most famous landmarks include the Maritime Museum, located in the Bujović Palace, the Church of St. Nicholas with its 55-meter-high bell tower offering stunning views of the Bay of Kotor, and the Martinović Palace, one of the oldest palaces in town.

However, what Perast is best known for is the island of Our Lady of the Rocks. The island is easily accessible by boat, with a ride lasting around ten minutes.

A small town situated right on the shores of the Bay of Kotor that will surely captivate you is Kotor. Many legends are associated with the founding of Kotor, and one of the most fascinating tells the story of a fairy and King Stefan. According to this legend, King Stefan wanted to build a fortress in the bay, but his efforts kept failing—until one night a fairy appeared and offered her help, moved by his humility. With her magic, the fortress was completed, but when the king arrogantly claimed the credit for himself, the fairy punished him by turning all the water in the town salty. Only after the king sincerely repented and acknowledged her contribution was the water restored, and he learned an important lesson in humility.

Kotor is truly one of the most unique towns on the Montenegrin coast, carrying a special magic and charm. Every corner, from the Cathedral of St. Tryphon to hidden squares, exudes the spirit of past centuries, while the panoramic views from the San Giovanni Fortress over the Bay of Kotor leave visitors breathless.
